Understanding Nia

What does Nia mean?

Nia in Swahili means purpose. The purpose of this organization is to be a ray of hope in the lives of many girls around the world.

Why does Nia support only girls?

Ideally, we would prefer to support deserving girls and boys alike. However, we have limited resources and that has forced us to think about channeling our funds towards the segment that needs the most help and carries the most impact. Some of the reasons why we chose to fund girls over boys are:

  • Girls drop out at a higher rate than boys from high schools and colleges in developing countries, often because of lack of money.
  • Usually, poor families tend to prioritize the education of their sons over that of their daughters. Nia attempts to help the girls left behind for economic reasons.
  • The social and economic impact of educating a girl generally tends to be greater than educating a boy from a similar situation.

Student FAQ

What is age group of students supported by Nia? Why?

Nia supports girls between the ages 14 and 25 (grades nine through undergraduate and graduate school) since the drop-out rate is higher among this age group. It is our belief that helping girls financially during the last phase of their education will go a long way to shape their future.

What is the average cost of supporting a girl's education?

In India, the average cost of supporting a girl's education can vary from $25 to $2500 per year, depending on the level of education. The cost of high school education can vary from $25 to $100 per year, and an undergraduate degree can cost anything from $500 to $2500 per year. To put this in perspective, the average family income of students we support ranges from $300 to $1500 per year.

How many girls are supported by Nia each year?
On average, Nia supports between 60 to 100 girls each year.

Can I support a specific girl? If so, can I get a regular updates on her progress?

At present, we do not match specific donors to specific students for operational, cost and student privacy reasons.

Does Nia support girls outside India?

At present, all the students supported by Nia are in India. It is our desire to expand Nia's reach to other developing countries. If you are willing to be a Nia facilitator or know anyone who would like to be Nia's facilitator in India or another developing country, please let us know.
